Far enough inland not to be affected by salt sprays but raised and tilted to face the sea, the Seaton Town Allotment site is surely one of the most picturesque venues for “grow your own” enthusiasts.
Currently we have 72 allotments ranging in size from just 53sq m to 231sq m at a charge currently of 17p per sq m.
By the middle of 2007 we intend to have available a further number of new plots which we are opening up on an area of spare ground at the top of the site.
This will go some way to accommodating the 20 or so people on the waiting list.
The range of crops able to be grown is enormous - peppers, chillies and aubergines, all growing outside after initial protection; melons in a plastic greenhouse and salad crops under frames throughout the winter.
I usually start picking asparagus in mid to late March and this year picked courgettes, french beans, raspberries and outdoor cucumbers on the 20th October. Mind you, it was 20c - a tad unusual, even here.
With that in mind, some of us are planning to try sweet potatoes next year. They need a very long season but starting them off indoors, in bins and then under cover outside till the end of May will, we hope, be successful.
Watch this space.
