Seaton Town Council - Tourist Information Centre

Seaton Town Council has received notice from East Devon District Council (EDDC) that it must vacate the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) at the Underfleet car park by October 2010. The TIC building is owned by EDDC but entirely staffed by Seaton Town Council employees.

Following representations from the Seaton and District Chamber of Commerce and local accommodation providers that they would prefer the TIC to stay at the Underfleet car park, Seaton Town Council decided at its meeting on Monday 16 November 2009 to accept an offer of temporary accommodation for the TIC at the Seaton Tramway Terminal from February 2010, as it is likely that building work for the visitor centre will start well before October 2010.

Town Clerk David Mears said: “It is inevitable that major disruption will take place on the regeneration site over the next couple of years and we are very grateful to Seaton Tramway for their offer. It will ensure that we can maintain a quality service to tourists and to local businesses and accommodation providers during what is going to be a very difficult time. It will involve some restructuring of the TIC but we will ensure that there is a highly visible tourist information presence at the Underfleet whilst building works takes place. We hope that, when regeneration is complete, there will be a fully restored TIC in the new Visitor Centre.”

Jenny Nunn, Managing Director of Seaton Tramway, said that the Tramway was happy to facilitate this move as it feels strongly about maintaining visitor numbers to the town and surrounding area with the scarce resources available, promoting it as an important destination on the Jurassic Coast and supporting the town's commerce as a whole which is very much dependent on tourism. With the TIC moving in before the start of the 2010 season, the changeover should be seamless and not affect the operational ability of the TIC in any way. In fact, we think with our pooled resources and exciting, new initiatives from the Chamber of Commerce, we should be able to "up" the tourism offer to the area.

Britain in Bloom results 2009

Seaton Town Councillors and staff were in Yeovil on Thursday 17th September for the presentations for Britain in Bloom and were delighted to receive a National Prize – the Sutton Seeds Cup 2009 for outstanding area nature conservation and a Silver award in the Preece Cup.

Councillors and town council staff would like to thank all those people who helped us to achieve our awards this year and invites any community group that wishes to be involved in Britain in Bloom in 2010 or any potential new sponsors for next year to contact the Office Manager, Mrs Marie Prideaux at the Town Council office 9 am – midday Tuesday to Thursday, telephone 01297 21388.

Next year it is hoped that Seaton Town Council will own the large central circular flowerbed at Fisherman’s Gap and any organisation that wishes to sponsor this site or be involved in the re-design and re-planting of that area are also asked to get in touch with the Office Manager.

EDDC Tesco Decision

Seaton Town Council was bitterly disappointed with the decision of EDDC’s Development Management Committee to approve the Tesco store and outline planning applications and to refuse the Sainsbury’s planning application.

There are various courses of action that could be taken at this point and the Town Clerk is exploring options available. Within the next couple of weeks it is hoped that all households in the town will be receiving a newsletter and questionnaire from the Town Council about priorities for the town. Residents will be asked to indicate if they wish the Town Council to take further action on their behalf and the likely costs of such action will be detailed. Residents are urged to return their questionnaires so that a representative view of what the town would like the Town Council to do can be ascertained.
